Did you know that research has shown that learning something new is a strategy that delays the onset of cognitive decline as we age? Here's the perfect oppotunity to take advantage of that enticing possibility! Our speakers this week are Alice Mitchell & Larry Pincus from the Academy for Lifelong Learning (ALL) at Cape Cod Community College. For almost 40 years, ALL has been providing classes as well as both volunteer and social opportunities for the retiree population on Cape Cod (and greatly needed: Cape Cod has a population with DOUBLE the national average of over-age-60 people). Some folks are surprised to learn that 4Cs hosts a program that provides learning opportunities for retirees. But the program is an example of a principle that is the heart of every community college's mission: provide everyone in the community paths to learning. Many members of the Academy are accomplished professionals in many fields, including teaching, and so many ALL members teach some of the courses that are offered, in addition to taking courses offered by others. Larry Pincus is a retired physician who lives in South Yarmouth and an example of an Academy member who both takes courses and teaches (in his case, beginning chess). Alice Mitchell also lives in South Yarmouth, having retired from a 40-year career as a high school counselor. She is a member of the Board of Directors of ALL.
